Right of Way Clearance for Snow Removal

As we approach the winter months, the City of Unalaska's Departments of Public Works and Public Safety would like to remind residents that personal or commercial property should not be located within the right-of-way of public streets.

When equipment moves through to clear the roads of snow, the operators are not always able to see or maneuver around  vehicles, equipment, or materials within the right-of-way, especially if that property is obscured by snow.

Alaska Statutes prohibit leaving a vehicle attended or unattended in the right-of-way on a public road if that  vehicle interferes "with the normal flow of traffic or with snow removal" (13 AAC 02.340). In addition, obstructions caused by property left in the right of-way can interfere with emergency response vehicles.

Please remove all property from the roadside right-of-way in anticipation of winter weather and subsequent snow removal activities. Any property left in the right-of-way may be removed by the City and the property owner shall be responsible for the removal expenses.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call the Department of Public Works at (907)581-1260 or the Department of Public Safety at (907)581-1233.
