POSITION: Police Services Specialist
POSITION HIRING RANGE: $37.24 - $40.96/hourly
The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the Police Services Specialist position in the Police Department. Located in the central Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska is a multicultural coastal community of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and is home to the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor.
The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all employee tasks in this classification. The duties shown are designed to provide a representative summary.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Supervised by the Office Manager, this non-sworn role provides operational, program, and community support. Responsibilities include driving department recruitment and social media efforts, community outreach, assisting the Department with administration and operations, and providing back up support for the Department of Motor Vehicles.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Lead department recruitment efforts through social media, job boards, professional networks, colleges, POST academies, and off-island recruitment events.
-
Support the full applicant process, including resume review, initial phone screenings, applicant communications, interview scheduling, and proctoring applicant testing.
-
Manage and create department social media content supporting recruitment, community outreach, public information, and department activities.
-
Represent the Police Department in the community at public safety events, schools, community activities, career fairs, and other outreach opportunities in a non-sworn capacity.
-
Build relationships with community partners, including schools, businesses, civic organizations, and other local groups.
-
Support DMV operations, including processing Alaska driver’s licenses, state IDs, vehicle titles, and related transactions, as well as conducting road tests.
-
Provide administrative and operational support to the Police Department, including records, data entry, department systems, supplies, and public assistance.
-
Maintain department access and technology systems, including key cards, identification cards, and the building camera system.
-
Serve as backup to the Office Manager and assist with a variety of departmental administrative functions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
-
Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of people.
-
Knowledge and skill in providing administrative support to a department.
-
Ability to create engaging, professional content for Facebook, Instagram, X, Snapchat, and other applicable recruitment platforms.
-
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Teams, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
-
Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
-
Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and maintain confidentiality.
-
Professional, positive, and approachable demeanor with the ability to represent the Police Department effectively in the community.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
-
High school diploma or GED required
-
Associates degree preferred
-
Two (2) years of advanced administrative experience, including skills in accounting, cash handling, and social media
LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
-
Must be at least 18 years of age
-
Must have or have the ability to obtain an AK Drivers’ License within 90 days of hire
-
Successfully pass a background test, which includes criminal background, professional, and reference checks
-
Successfully pass a pre-employment drug test
-
Must be eligible to work in the US; if hired, must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9) as required by Federal Law
-
Successfully pass a background check and any other regulatory screening requirements, including CJIS authorization
-
Must have the ability to pass all applicable DMV training
