POSITION: Office Specialist
SALARY: $32.77 - $37.99/hour [Union Position Hiring range - Step 1-6]
SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the Office Specialist position in the Department of Ports and Harbors. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska, is a coastal community in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.
The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all employee tasks in this classification. The duties shown are designed to provide a representative summary.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under supervision of the Port Director, this position supports the scheduling, billing, and administrative operations of the City’s harbor facilities and airport terminal. This position serves as a primary point of contact for vessel coordination, processes payments and billing for port services, maintains accurate records, and provides general clerical and customer service support to ensure efficient and compliant operations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
-
Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with vessel operators, tenants, agencies, and the public.
-
Strong organizational, time management, and attention-to-detail skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
-
Experience processing billing, payments, deposits, purchase orders, and maintaining accurate financial and administrative records.
-
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel, Word, and Outlook) and the ability to maintain databases, spreadsheets, and electronic records.
-
Ability to coordinate vessel scheduling, maintain harbor records, and interpret tariffs, policies, and procedures; maritime or port operations knowledge preferred.
-
Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and adapt to changing operational priorities.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
-
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
-
Two (2) years of related experience, preferably in administrative and financial support.
-
Other combinations of education and experience that could provide knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated individually.
LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
-
Must be at least 18 years of age.
-
Must have or have the ability to obtain a Driver’s License within 90 days of hire.
-
Successfully pass a background test, which includes criminal background, professional, and reference checks.
-
Successfully pass a pre-employment drug test.
-
Must be eligible to work in the US; if hired, must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9) as required by Federal law.
-
Ability to possess a TWIC card would be preferable.
