POSITION: Mechanic Supervisor
SALARY: $47.88 - $55.51 [Union Position Hiring Steps 1-6]
The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for Mechanic Supervisor. Located in the central Aleutian Islands, Unalaska, Alaska, is a multicultural coastal community of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and is home to the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor.
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Shown are duties intended to provide a representative summary.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Supervises and participates in the maintenance, inspection, repair, and long-term management of the City’s vehicle and equipment fleet. Oversees mechanics and fleet operations to ensure vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, and compliant with applicable regulations and City policies. Performs advanced diagnostics and repairs on light- and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment; manages inventory, budgeting, reporting, and fleet maintenance records; and coordinates long-term fleet planning, preventative maintenance, and operational improvements. This position also supports the implementation and effective use of fleet management software, enterprise resource management platforms, and telematics systems to improve operational efficiency, maintenance tracking, and asset lifecycle management.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
-
Knowledge of gas and diesel engines, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic engine control systems used in municipal fleet operations.
-
Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain light- and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment using computerized diagnostic tools and software.
-
Knowledge of welding, fabrication, preventive maintenance practices, and shop safety procedures.
-
Ability to supervise, train, motivate, and evaluate mechanics and support personnel in a safe and efficient work environment.
-
Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and recordkeeping skills.
-
Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, technical manuals, and manufacturer service documentation.
-
Experience or demonstrated ability to learn and effectively utilize fleet management software, enterprise resource management (ERM/ERP) platforms, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and telematics data systems for asset tracking, preventative maintenance scheduling, reporting, and operational analysis.

Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, Alaska State safety standards, and safe fleet maintenance practices.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
-
High school diploma or GED required.
-
Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a mechanic working on heavy-duty construction, maintenance, or fleet equipment.
-
Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory or lead mechanic experience preferred.
-
Formal training on diesel and gas engines required.
-
Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
-
Experience using computerized diagnostic systems, fleet maintenance software, telematics platforms, or enterprise management systems preferred.
LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
-
Alaska CDL Class “B” with “X” endorsement required or ability to obtain within a timeframe established by the City.
-
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
-
Proficient with computers and standard Microsoft Office software
-
Successfully pass a background check, which includes criminal, professional, and reference checks, and pass a pre-employment drug test.
-
Must be eligible to work in the United States and, if hired, complete federal employment eligibility verification (Form I-9).
