SALARY:                    $42.98 - $49.82/hourly [Union Position Hiring range - Step 1-6]

 

The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the Mechanic II position. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska, is a coastal community in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under moderate supervision from the Mechanic Supervisor, the Mechanic II performs skilled inspection, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of City vehicles and equipment, including light-duty vehicles, heavy diesel equipment, and hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems. This position also performs welding and fabrication, preventative maintenance, advanced diagnostics, maintains accurate service records, and provides technical guidance on complex repairs while ensuring safe and efficient shop operations.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: 

  • Knowledge of gas and diesel engine systems, including diagnosing and repairing light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.

  • Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, air brake, and mechanical systems common to construction and utility equipment.

  • Preferred experience in welding and fabrication, including MIG, TIG, stick welding, plasma cutting, and oxy-acetylene torch work.

  • Skilled in interpreting wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, technical manuals, and diagnostic codes.

  • Skilled in operating and maintaining a variety of shop tools and equipment.

  • Ability to perform field repairs and respond to emergency maintenance needs.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple repair projects, maintain accurate maintenance records, and meet deadlines.

  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and commitment to following safe work practices and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Automotive trade school or equivalent.

  • Five (5) years experience as a mechanic on heavy-duty construction and maintenance equipment preferred.

  • Welding and fabrication experience preferred.

 

LICENSES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Required to have, or be able to obtain, an Alaska Driver’s License within 90 days of hire and obtain Alaska Bush CDL Class “B”, including medical certification.

  • Must be eligible to work in the US; if hired, must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9) as required by Federal law. 

  • Successfully pass a background check, which includes criminal background, reference, CDL, and drug test.

  • Ability to work in conditions inherent to an industrial environment with loud noise; perform work in adverse weather and occasionally work non-traditional hours.

  • Maintain active and current certifications and licensing for the duration of employment.
